The national problem gambling line is 1-866-531-2600, at no cost, confidential, and answered at any hour. ConnexOntario covers Ontario on 1-866-531-2600 with live chat as well. British Columbia's line is 1-888-795-6111. Alberta's is 1-866-332-2322. Quebec's is 1-800-461-0140.

No threshold has to be crossed before calling is appropriate. Uncertainty about whether it has become a problem is itself a reasonable thing to phone about.

What to watch for

Deposits exceeding what was planned, more than once. Playing in order to recover a loss instead of for enjoyment. Using money allocated to something else. Concealing the amount spent. A sense that stopping is not an option until the position is recovered. Funding a deposit with borrowed money.

Any one of these is worth acting on well before it becomes a crisis, and the controls below are far easier to apply early.

Controls that make a difference

Account-level deposit limits, configured before a session rather than in the middle of one. Every brand ranked here provides them, buried in account settings rather than surfaced anywhere prominent.

Cooling-off periods that suspend an account temporarily. Self-exclusion, which closes it for an extended term and is intentionally hard to undo. Blocking software at the device or router level, which has the significant advantage of covering sites you have not yet joined.

One structural gap deserves naming. Ontario's licensed market operates a central self-exclusion register that applies across every operator inside it simultaneously. The offshore brands ranked on this site are outside that register, and excluding yourself at one of them does not propagate to any of the others. Device-level blocking is the only tool that closes that gap.

If you are worried about someone else

Every line listed above accepts calls from partners, parents and friends, not only from the person gambling. Gam-Anon meetings operate across the country. Where money is missing or debt has built up, a non-profit credit counselling agency is a far better first contact than any lender.

This site's own position

No page here describes gambling as a source of income, a strategy or a solution to a money problem, because it is not any of those things. Where an operator's terms make a bonus effectively unclearable the ranking says so, including when that operator pays a commission. Where an offer is engineered to pull a larger deposit than a reader should make, that is written down as plainly as possible.
